Livelihood program of Islamic Development Bank
The FT has recently published an article on the IsDB’s Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF).
In my view, as a former Social Protection Minister and current Advisory Council Member of the World Bank on Partnership for Economic Inclusion the following points are worth noting:
- IsDB is running 37 projects in 22 countries with the objective of impacting 400mm people living in abject poverty. Through health, agriculture, and basic infrastructure.
- The Indonesian example has been made a case study for the sake of this FT article, in which women are 24% of farmers.
- The project in question is assisted by IFAD and supports smallholder famers to enhance their agricultural productivity through rice paddies in uplands which are more challenging.
- Stages of project are 1- enhancing crop resilience and productivity, 2- developing agribusiness, 3- strengthening institutional delivery systems.
- This model is common to IFIs across the developing world.
- Results which need tracking for success include the following: number of cooperatives benefitting maximum female farmers, trained farmers, improved agricultural climate resilient practices, improved health indicators, increased value chains with help of PPPs.
This will have an impact on the summit for the future. it will also impact poverty & health SDGs greatly. This is just one example. Many such projects need to be projected.
